supportive environments
Edit: Identifying details about my workplace have been removed for reasons of prudence and realpolitik.
You know, it's fascinating.
I live in one of the most liberal cities in the world--so liberal as to swing a red state blue singlehandedly, a city with an extensive trans resource guide and nondiscrimination laws in place.
I work at (A PLACE) that puts the 'liberal' in '(PHRASE INCLUDING "LIBERAL").' Its name is synonymous with radical-left politics and social libertinism. And when I was hired, I was assured it would be a supportive work environment, so long as I didn't mind a little ribbing alongside everyone else, which I don't.
And still:
Whenever there's an argument at work, a he-said-she-said, a question of credibility, somehow, magically, my being transsexual comes up. Just sort of offhand. In unrelated conversations about whether I'm accurately reporting an event, or whether or not a coworker was being racist, or whether or not it's appropriate for other people in the workplace to be discussing their sex lives, it just sort of comes up.
Fascinating.
I told my boss today: Look, sir, I know where people like me stand. It's near the bottom, whether or not I talk about it. The last thing I want is to give anyone a reason to actually be upset with me. I'm not here to rock the boat--I just want to keep my head down and do my job.
Still, though, even if I do, even if I make a mistake based on gross incompetence or basic forgetfulness, I know what'll come up next in conversation.
When I suggested this might be an inappropriate situation, I was told by my supportive boss to tell anyone who wanted to discuss the issue with me that I wasn't at liberty to talk about my "personal life" or "intimate relations" on the clock, and to keep my mouth shut. He included in this stricture my friends among the staff and students, so long as I'm in uniform.
Just. Fascinating.
